SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION & REQUIREMENTS - postmarked by May 4, 2018
  1. Submit a recording on CD postmarked by May 4, 2018 of a solo piece that is at the district level.
    Submissions that are not solo pieces will not be considered for scholarship.

    (Please check your Jr. District, Sr. District or All-State audition pieces for examples.) 
    (2) excerpts (3-5 minutes total) – fast to demonstrate technical skill & slow demonstrating tone quality & expression 
  2. The recording must be clearly marked with: First & Last Name, Instrument and Title of the piece. 
  3. Recordings must be submitted in one of the following formats: MP3, MP4, wav, or aiff. 
  4. Duplicate paper copy of the piece performed – Do not send originals as they will not be returned.
  5. Registration (below) & registration fee must be completed to be considered.

    STUDENT INFORMATION

    ELECTIVES
    Each student will be enrolled in two one-hour electives which meet daily.  Class placement will be determined by final payment, ranking, and availability. View the course descriptions below and please rank the following classes.  (1) most desired  |  (12) least desired
    Vocal Workshop *New Course*
    Do you enjoy singing? Does your band director encourage you to sing in band class, but you wish you had more confidence to sing in front of others? Have fun learning some pop tunes while learning various vocal techniques. Build confidence and have fun singing in a relaxed environment. ​​

    Conducting
    Think it looks easy to stand at the front of the group and wave the baton? Try your hand at conducting beat patterns, showing dynamics, and even just holding the baton correctly! Each student will have the opportunity to learn basic conducting skills, lead the class as the conductor, and take home his or her own conducting baton.

    Colors of Sound
    If you’re someone who loves to listen to music, this class is for you. Open your ears to a new way of listening. Hear things in music you never noticed, and learn what you’re hearing.
     
    Finale
    Have you been arranging your own pieces, or rewriting parts? Are you thinking you’d like to try but find handwriting daunting? Maybe you’ve been exploring the free Noteflight software, and are ready to step up to something more robust. Learn some of the basics of Finale and see what it can do to make your life easier!
     
    Intro to Sound Recording Technology
    Have you ever wondered why there are so many knobs and buttons on a mixing board? Are you considering a major in Sound Recording Technology? This class is a chance to participate in a live recording session in UML’s professionally equipped studios.
     
    Intro to Percussion
    Always wondered what all those sounds back there were? What on earth is a tambourine thumb roll? Have a blast learning what these instruments are and how to play them together!
     
    Intro to Guitar
    Think it would be great to accompany yourself? Learn the basics of playing a guitar, including a few chords and songs to go with them. Guitars will be provided for students to use in class.
     
    Contemporary Horns
    Are you someone who listens to music and never hears the lyrics? This class is an exploration into all the great melodies and lines you hear the instrumentalists playing behind those lyrics. Learn to play a number of these great lines on your own instrument. This class involves playing on your instrument and is intended for melodic instruments.
     
    Writing and Arranging
    If you’ve already dabbled in writing or arranging, or think you might be ready to try it out, this class is for you! Take some time analyzing a piece to rearrange, or learning some strategies and considerations for your own works.
     
    World Drumming
    The World Drumming class will introduce students to the basic playing of the West African djembe drum and teach students to play together in mixed drum ensembles. Cooperative and fun musical exercises will bring players together in a great hands-on experience.  
    ​No drumming experience is necessary!
     
    Intro to Harmonica
    Imagine being able to carry your instrument in your pocket! Learn a little history, basic notation, and a few songs to get you started on your way! Leave with your very own harmonica to continue playing around on your own.

    Intro to Piano
    Do you sit down at the piano and wish you could play something for your friends? Learn the basics of playing piano and have the opportunity to perform in class.

    MUSIC THEORY
    Each student will be enrolled in a theory class which meets daily. There are eight levels from introductory to advanced study. Please read the theory course criteria below and select the theory level that you feel would best suit you. 

    Level 1A
    Students should:
    • Have some experience reading and writing music in treble or bass clef.
     
    Level 1B
    Students should:
    • Be able to read and write music in treble or bass clef.
    • Have some understanding of time signatures and key signatures.
     
    Level 1C
    Students should:
    • Be able to read and write music in treble or bass clef.
    • Have some understanding of time signatures and key signatures.
    • Have some understanding of major scales.
     
    Level 2A
    Students should:
    • Meet the criteria listed for all Level 1 classes.
    • Know how to construct a major scale.

    ​Level 2B
    Students should:
    • Meet the criteria listed for all Level 1 classes.
    • Know their major and minor scales.
    • Have an understanding of intervals. 
    Level 2C
    Students should:
    • Meet the criteria listed for all Level 1 classes.
    • Know their major and minor scales.
    • Have an understanding of intervals and triads. 
     
    Level 3A
    Students should:
    • Meet the criteria listed for all Level 2 classes.
    • Know major, minor, diminished, and augmented triads.
    • Know how to construct seventh chords.
     
    Level 3B
    Students should:
    • Meet the criteria listed for all Level 2 classes.
    • Know major, minor, diminished, and augmented triads and seventh chords. 
    • Have some experience analyzing an SATB score. 
    • Have an understanding of instrument transpositions. 


    ADDITIONAL PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY
    During band camp, ALL campers and staff will be attending a Lowell Spinners baseball game.  The camp has been asked to perform the Star Spangled Banner. 
    ​All wind players who would like to perform shall memorize a fairly easy version of the national anthem. (available prior to camp).
    It is a choice to perform, but most wind players do choose to participate. One percussionist will be chosen to perform with the wind players.

Finale Concert
The Finale Concert will be held at UMass Lowell's Durgin Hall on Friday, July 17, 2015 at 6:30 pm.  
Introductions and awards will begin at 6:30 pm and the performance will begin at 7:00 pm.

For the 19th year, the Department of Music at UMass Lowell is offering a camp for talented instrumental music students who have a passion for music. The Mary Jo Leahey Symphonic Band Camp is a one week long, residential, immersion into music, held July 12-17, 2015.  To learn more about this program please view our camp video.

Think you know everything about Rock & Roll? Think again! Learn not only who the key players were, but how each generation was impacted by the generation before.
 
Creative Practice Techniques
Hate to practice? Maybe you need some new strategies. This class will teach you not just what to practice, but how to practice. Walk away feeling that you can spend your practice time working smarter, not harder.
​We must receive your Registration Form, Medical Form with Registration Fee in order to hold a spot in the camp.
